The Occitan Nation Party and the vote on the name of the Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées region

Press release :

From 9th May to 10th June 2016, the people of Midi Pyrénées and Languedoc Roussillon, two regions that were arbitrarily grouped together, had the opportunity to express their choice via the internet or vouchers in their newspapers. They were given 5 options.

Among them, the choice of Occitania was apparently widely supported with 44.90 % and 91598 votes in favour.

The Occitan Nation Party, even though it preferred the choice of Central Occitania, which was rejected, took part in the mobilization process.

For lack of a better choice it had recommended to vote for Occitania or Occitania-Catalan country.

The Occitan Nation Party believes this result is simply the sign of a strong Occitan consciousness that outshines the traditionally low election results of Occitan activists.

According to the Occitan Nation Party, we should bear in mind that the former administrative regions : Aquitaine, Limousin, Auvergne, Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur and the departments of Drôme and Ardèche, are also part of Occitania within the French State.

Occitania cannot and should not be limited to the two former Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées regions.

After 24th June 2016, even if the choice of Occitania to name the new Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées region is ratified by the regional council, The Occitan Nation Party will continue to promote the idea of Central Occitania and to denounce the effect of a territorial reform that was carried out in a technocratic manner, without consultation and without granting any power to the new regions in the fields of legislation, taxation and education.
