The Occitan Nation Party reacts to François Hollande’s press conference
The Occitan Nation Party (P.N.O) has taken note with interest of François Hollande’s announcements during his press conference of 14th January.
The latter clearly pronounced himself in favour of a reduction in the number of regions whose administrative network covers the territory of the French Republic, to ensure control of public spending.
The PNO welcomes this awareness on the part of the highest-ranking person in the French State. This reduction in the number of regions will involve merging and restructuring whose details have not been announced yet.
The PNO is very much in favour of a tighter grouping of current Occitan administrative regions, without ruling out adjustments of their limits. The PNO will fight against and let know its firm and determined opposition to any merging of an Occitan region with a non-Occitan region.
The PNO repeats that it has always been in favour of the suppression of French departments whose fate was not evoked on the 14th January.
At the moment administrative tasks entrusted to departments and regions are different in nature. The removal of departments will lead to former comptences of departments being taken over by regions and department administrative staff in charge of these tasks will carry on their work under the aegis of the region
The PNO would like the French State to commit itself to a real decentralization. We want the State to grant new legislative and fiscal competences to the regions and that the regions’ budget be financed through local tax collection. A negotiated part of tax money would be paid back the central power in Paris.
